CBD has found its way into all sorts of wellness products, including candles. If you want to try this therapeutic product without paying hundreds of dollars every year, you can make it yourself. Read on for a short guide on how to make CBD candles at home with a few simple ingredients!

Why Make CBD Candles at Home?

The main reason to make CBD candles at home is to save money, as we just mentioned. A nice CBD candle goes for over 20 dollars, and that adds up if you buy even just a few each year. By making the initial investment in bulk ingredients, you can save big money over time.

Moreover, a DIY approach puts you in control of the ingredients. You get complete knowledge and peace of mind concerning what is in your wellness products. Plus, it allows you to experiment with scents and strengths to create a truly personalized product.

Finally, these candles make great gifts! By making your own, you’ll always have a great present for every occasion.

What You’ll Need To Get Started

The two main ingredients in these candles are wax and CBD oil. Beeswax is an excellent option because it is natural and nontoxic, and it burns evenly. If you plan to pour a bunch of candles, then buying bulk beeswax is great because it’s cost-effective and shelf stable. As for the CBD oil, we recommend buying a high-quality, full-spectrum or broad-spectrum oil formula. Aside from the wax and oil, you will also need the following supplies:

  • essential oils (for fragrance)
  • candle wicks (pre-waxed and tabbed)
  • heat-safe containers (mason jars, tins, or small glass jars)
  • double boiler or heat-safe bowl
  • wooden stir sticks or chopsticks
  • a thermometer
  • a glue dot or adhesive (to keep the wick in place)

Steps To Make CBD Candles

Now that you have your supplies, follow these steps.

1. Prepare Your Containers

Secure the candle wick in the center of your container using a glue dot or a bit of melted wax. Wrap the top of the wick around a wooden stir stick or a chopstick (this will keep it upright when you pour the wax).

2. Measure and Melt the Wax

Using a double boiler or heat-safe bowl, melt your wax until it reaches about 180°F (82°C). Make sure the temperature doesn’t exceed this point to avoid burning the wax. Stir occasionally to ensure it melts evenly.

3. Mix in CBD and Essential Oils

After the wax melts completely, remove it from heat and allow it to cool slightly (to approximately 130°F or 55°C). Add your CBD oil and essential oils to the wax, stirring well. The recommended ratio is around 1mL of CBD oil per 8oz of wax, but you can adjust this based on the potency you want.

4. Pour the Wax

Carefully pour the mixture into your prepared containers, ensuring the wick stays centered. Don’t fill the container to the top since the wax will want a bit of room to expand as it cools.

5. Cool and Trim the Wick

Allow your candles to cool and harden for a full day. Once they’re set, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch.

6. Light Up and Relax

Congratulations—you’ve just made a CBD candle following this short guide! All that’s left to do is light one up and enjoy the calming benefits.
